French Toast Not-Pizza Pizza Rolls

All the nostalgia of Saturday breakfast and after school snacks wrapped up into one!

Ingredients

  • 1 egg

  • ¼ cup milk

  • ½ tsp cinnamon

  • ½ tsp nutmeg

  • Vanilla extract, just a dash

  • 3-4 slices of Wonder bread

  • Maple syrup

  • Neutral oil for frying (vegetable, canola, peanut...you get it)

  1. In a bowl, whisk together egg, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla.  Set aside.

  2. Using a serrated knife, cut off crusts of the Wonder bread.  Cut each slice into four squares.

  3. Begin to heat the frying oil on medium to high heat in a sauté pan.

  4. Press your finger into the center of half of the bread squares to make a small well.  Carefully pour a small amount of maple syrup into the well.  Put an un-welled bread square on top and pinch the edges together to close.

  5. Test the temperature of the oil by sticking the end of a wooden spoon in the oil.  If small bubbles form around the spoon, it’s ready.  If not, adjust the temperature accordingly.  I suppose you could also use a thermometer for this step and see if the oil is between 350-400 degrees F, but where’s the fun in that??

  6. When the oil is ready, quickly dunk the not pizza pizza rolls into the egg/milk mixture and then gently place into the oil.  Fry until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.

  7. Carefully remove the not pizza pizza rolls from the oil using tongs or a frying spider, and let drain on paper towels before serving.

  8. Turn off the heat and let the oil come to room temperature before pouring into a fat can and freezing for disposal.  Never dispose of oil/grease by pouring down the sink!  The mutant reptiles living in the sewer do not take kindly to this.

Wanna riff on this?  Here are Christine’s notes from when she was brainstorming this recipe.  Let us know if you try any of these, or if you come up with your own way to create French Toast Not Pizza Pizza Rolls!
